ABOUT HOUSMAN LEARNING
Housman Learning is an early-stage education company building rigorous, research-grounded, evidence-based emotional intelligence and early childhood development curriculum for children from birth through 2nd grade. Founded by Dr. Donna Housman, our work draws on her ECSEL approach (Emotional Cognitive Social Early Learning), refined over three decades of clinical and classroom practice.
We provide solutions to school districts, charter networks, Head Start grantees, state-funded pre-K programs, and center-based early childhood networks. Our buyers are curriculum directors, early childhood program directors, Head Start leaders, and education executives who understand whole-child development as the foundation for academic outcomes.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a quota-carrying, individual-contributor field sales role responsible for new-business acquisition. We are hiring one regional executive to build out our development efforts, with flexibility on initial geography: this seat can anchor in the Southeast, Northeast, or Midwest. We draw the territory around you and your existing warm relationships. You will sell Housman's teacher professional development, classroom curriculum, and assessment tools into K-2 district contexts and birth-through-pre-K early childhood contexts.
You report directly to our COO, work closely with our founder and CEO, and will help define what this commercial function becomes and how it grows.
YOUR RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE TERRITORY
This role is built for someone who arrives warm. Whichever region, you come with current, personal relationships with the people who buy what we sell: district professional development and early-learning leaders, Head Start directors, and pre-K program decision-makers. These are relationships you can call on in your first 90 days.
In your application, tell us which region you are anchored in:
- Southeast: Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and neighboring states, with the final territory drawn around your strongest markets.
- Northeast: New York City core, with New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
- Midwest: Chicago and greater Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Build pipeline through your existing relationships first, alongside outbound prospecting, conference presence, partner referrals, and inbound conversion
- Run discovery, demos, pilots, and procurement cycles end to end with district and early-childhood buying committees
- Navigate your region's funding and procurement landscape, and help buyers align purchases to the funding streams that fit
- Close $500,000 in net-new business in Year 1 (average account size of $75,000), building toward a larger, more efficient Year 2 as the territory matures
- Maintain disciplined CRM hygiene in Zoho; partner with the COO on weekly pipeline reviews and monthly forecasts
- Feed structured field intelligence back to product and marketing
KNOWING YOUR REGION
You should recognize your region's list at a glance.
- Southeast: Texas pre-K and Foundation School Program funding; Georgia's Bright from the Start and Lottery-funded Pre-K; Alabama First Class Pre-K; Head Start and CCDBG across the region; Title I, Title II, and Title IV-A.
- Northeast: NYC Public Schools and the Division of Early Childhood Education (Pre-K, 3-K, and the new 2-K); New York State BOCES and COSER cooperative contracting; New Jersey state-funded preschool (the former Abbott districts); the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood; Head Start, CCDBG, IDEA Section 619, Title I, Title II, and Title IV-A.
- Midwest: CPS early learning and the Chicago Early Learning enrollment system; Illinois' Early Childhood Block Grant and Preschool for All; Ohio's Early Childhood Education grants and Publicly Funded Child Care under the Department of Children and Youth, plus the Educational Service Centers; Wisconsin 4K, and the CESA cooperatives; Michigan's Great Start Readiness Program and PreK for All expansion under MiLEAP; Head Start and CCDBG across the region; Title I, Title II, and Title IV-A.
COMMUNICATING IN THIS ROLE
Our buyers span regions and communities with different vocabularies. We lead with emotional intelligence, executive function, school readiness, and evidence: language that resonates with district leaders, early childhood directors, and families everywhere. Many of your buyers serve highly multilingual communities; our teacher development program is fully available in Spanish and Portuguese, and we position our classroom curriculum as complementary to existing core curricula, not a replacement. Comfort with audience-aware, professionally disciplined communication is essential to success in this role.
WHY THIS ROLE
Housman is small, mission-driven, and founder-led. Selling a pedagogy that asks educators to teach emotional skills explicitly, with evidence behind it, is a different conversation than selling a literacy app, and the buyers who understand this work become long-term partners. You will be our senior field seller, with a direct line to the COO, and founder & CEO, meaningful input on territory strategy, ICP refinement, and pricing, and your fingerprints on the sales playbook itself.
REQUIREMENTS
- Four to seven or more years of full-cycle B2B sales experience in education, with at least two years selling curriculum, assessment, professional development, or whole-child products
- A demonstrated record of carrying and attaining quotas of $700,000 or more in new business. We will ask for specifics: the deals you personally sourced and closed, their dollar values, funding sources, and cycle lengths
- Warm, current buyer relationships in your proposed region that you can activate in your first 90 days
- Comfort with a six-to-nine-month consultative sale involving four to seven stakeholders and committee-based decision-making
- Working fluency with your region's funding and procurement landscape
- Experience with Zoho (preferred) or an equivalent CRM
- Bachelor's degree required; coursework or graduate work in education, child development, early childhood, social work, or psychology meaningfully strengthens your candidacy
- Physically located in the region you propose to sell
- Spanish-language fluency is a strong plus
- Authorized to work in the United States
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- Base salary: $100,000
- Year-1 commission: a flat 8 percent on every dollar of net-new business you close, uncapped
- Year-1 target: $500,000 in net-new bookings; on-target earnings of $140,000
- Ramp guarantee: your first two quarters carry a non-recoverable commission guarantee of $10,000 per quarter, so your guaranteed Year-1 cash is $120,000 while your pipeline builds
- A deliberate builder's plan: we weight Year 1 toward an elevated first-dollar commission rate because the hardest work of a founding territory is building the pipeline. As your book matures into renewal and expansion revenue, the commission plan is reviewed annually and rebalanced to reflect the evolving mix of new and established business
- Benefits: 50% health and dental insurance premium coverage (incl. no-deductible options); unlimited PTO; full travel and expense reimbursement
